The best wineries on the Mornington Peninsula have more than wine – they offer experiences!
As a uni student who only turned the legal drinking age a year ago, I can tell you now that I haven’t had the much experience with alcohol, let alone wine. The only wines I have is pink and sparkling and often under $10. Please don’t judge me, I just think it tastes better that way. The sweeter the better in my opinion. I’ve had sips of the red wine that my parents buy and I just can’t bring myself to appreciate it the same way that they do. What is so appealing about a drink that tastes like off grape juice? I’ll stick to my Ribena thanks.
So when I was choosing my subjects for the start of my second year, I wasn’t particularly interested in the subject of Wine Tasting like my friends were. It took a lot of convincing on their behalf to get me to do the class with them. I didn’t have any other breadth subject that I was eager to join so i suppose it wasn’t that difficult. But still, I was under the impression that I would despise it, since essentially the whole purpose was to recognise wine by its taste. But university was about opening your mind to new things so I agreed in the end to try.
I was so glad I did. The course allowed us to go on field trips to wineries across Victoria to taste new wines. At first I was hesitant. But then I started to enjoy it. Maybe it was the fact that the wines my parents got were a bit daggy but I came to actually appreciate the taste of the different wines. It might have had something to do with the fact that most of the wines I was trying were dessert wines but we can ignore that. I like to pretend my palate has matured from sugar by now even though it really hasn’t.
We went exploring everywhere, but I would have to say the best wineries were those around the Mornington Peninsula. It wasn’t just the wine. It was the whole experience of chatting with friends by the beach. Soaking up the sun and admiring the scenery. I can’t tell you now how grateful I am to my friends for convincing me to join the class. Now I have some excellent knowledge about wines and great recommendations on wineries!
